Building an email list is something everyone should be making a top priority. I know many people are doing things here and there, but they aren’t using their fullest potential and going all in on the idea!
Growing your email list by collecting email addresses from those who are interested in the topics you are creating content about is your life blood of your online business. Some may argue your email list IS your business.
So, knowing how to grow this is a really big deal! In this episode, I go over why you should build an email list and how to get started.
Lead magnets are the best way to do it. You want these lead magnets to be targeted and effective. I have been hired a million times to create them for businesses, when honestly… If you have the time, you could probably make them yourself.
Although, it can be strategic if you have more money than time, I know that’s not often the case for many online business owners starting out. Hiring someone to create a lead magnet for you can be really expensive. Lead magnets require coming up with content, writing, editing, designing, more editing and all of this is usually times however many pages!
That’s a lot of time to pay a freelancer to do it. For some people they prefer to hire out and if that’s you, I offer services for that, but my GOAL is that you don’t have to hire me! Seriously! If you have the time, the most valuable thing you can do is have more control of your own marketing.

Hey guys, it’s Christina and today I’m going to go over the importance of building your email list and how to get started on that. Building your email list often tends to be an after thought and the more clients that I’ve taken on, they always have something to launch or to sell, but they don’t have an email list and if they do, they often have bought it. And I will talk a little bit about that today as well. So just stay tuned and find out why you really, really need this email list. And I know you hear it all the time, but find out why it’s said over and over again because it’s actually that important and how to get started on building your own.
Okay, for starters as far as why you should build your email list and why it’s so valuable. I want to talk about this a little more because I know that people hear all the time that building your email list is so important. They aren’t buying into the thought all the time. And so just to go over a few reasons why it’s really, really important is it’s for one, it’s gonna make it extremely difficult to be successful at launching something. The, if you are being successful at launching things or making money, you’re leaving a lot on the table by not having an email list. These are going to be your lowest hanging fruit and your highest conversion is going to happen in your email list. So social media platforms a lot of people build their business on them and as they change they can change their algorithm and they can go away completely.
Instagram and Facebook are definitely here to stay for quite a while. They won’t always be here, but they’ll be here for a lot longer. They definitely are not too close to the end of their time, but because they are so powerful, they are able to change their algorithm. And they did. And a lot of people a few years ago really got very frustrated and lost a lot of what they built because they built it on a free platform. And so when you have your email list, you own that, that is your business that you actually have access to. The people in your audience. And whenever it’s social media, all they have to do is change their algorithm, meaning that when you post something, it’s up to that social platform to give it reach. So to present it in front of people and give it exposure, it can choose just not to show your post to the people that follow you.
So a lot of times that is what been happening and there are different things that you can do to beat the algorithm, but again, they can just change it again. So these social platforms can leave or they can change their algorithm as they did. So when you’re launching, people aren’t seeing it, even if they want to see it. They might not be seeing your posts and they might have no idea that you are launching something or that you have this great news or all of the value that you’re providing, that you are spending so much time creating all of this content to put it out in the world. When you don’t have an email list, you don’t know that it’s going to get in front of the people that you’re, that you want to get it in front of. So another big important reason is so that you can nurture your leads and provide an experience for them.
When your audience is on social media, you can’t have all of the control over this. So whenever you have your email list, you can set up these automations to create these unique experiences for them by just sending them more and more value as you go along. And then of course, when you have something amazing to share with them, either for free or you’re launching something, you actually have that access to them. The last thing, although it’s not all of the reasons that you need an email list, but this is a really big one. Not only can you create experiences for them, but you can create unique experiences for them based on their behavior. And what I mean by that is that you can create content, you have your content often in different subtopics and based off of how people got on your email list or the things that they’re clicking on, you can actually program into your email service provider that they are tagged certain things based on those subtopics.
So when someone clicks something that, let’s say you are a personal trainer and if someone is clicking on something that is nutrition-related, you can actually create an automation where you are sending them nutrition-related emails. This is something that you can pre-build, you are sending them value and different pieces of content related to nutrition while someone else might click something or join your list from a weight loss program. Then you know that this person is interested in that part of what you do. They are interested in weight loss, not building muscle necessarily, not necessarily just nutrition, but they’re specifically interested in weight loss. And you can actually create an automation just for that type of person who is interested in that topic. And so their experience with you and your business is going to be more defined and more targeted because you just know more about them.
You also can not on social media tell which user specifically is reacting to what. You don’t know out of which kinds of posts that you’re posting, what they’re reading. And with email you can actually find out that information from the individual people. So that’s huge because in marketing of course the more targeted we are, the better experience we’re providing, the more value we’re providing our audience and the more effective everything is going to be. So if your next program is you know, nutrition-related, then you can actually talk to those people differently than you would everyone else. So maybe you have an email during your launch where you are telling them about their, about your program. And there are people that you don’t know if they are interested in nutrition, you’re gonna talk to them differently than people that you already know that that is exactly what they’re looking for.
And that is the kind of content that they are responding to. So that’s a little more advanced. But this is why you just want to get started on building your email list. These are the possibilities that could happen in the future if you’re not already doing these things. So now that we’ve gone over the reasons why building your email list is so important. Another thing I do want to also point out is it’s also more personal. It’s same along with the unique experience, but also when someone sends you an email and they’re talking to you through email, it feels more personal. It’s easier to connect with them. Then when someone posts something on social media, you’re well aware. I mean we’re, we’re aware that, you know, if we get an email from someone that it’s not always like they’re not directly emailing us, but it feels more like that then when they post something on social media, we’re well aware that they just blasted it to everyone. So it’s definitely just more personal.
So let’s talk about ways that you can get started to get started on building your email list. For one, you want to start right away and to get started on this, you need to provide some sort of value in exchange for an email address. So people typically do this with lead magnets. Lead magnets can be a variety of things. They can be videos, they can be ebooks, they can be as simple pdf. It can be an exercise, it can be all kinds of things. And I’ll talk a little bit about that later and I can send you guys to some resources to have more ideas on what kinds of lead magnets that you can create. But the simplest form of a lead magnet is a simple pdf. But there’s many things that you can do with that. So you want the lead magnets to be as targeted and relevant as possible.
So in order to do this, typically you need multiple at least throughout time. So having one single lead magnet is a great place to start, but you definitely want a way to create multiple kinds based on all of the different sub topics that you talk about that you share content and you create content about. So an example of this, I’ll go back to the personal trainer one because it’s just the simplest, I think. If you have a blog post, let’s say you’re a blogger and you have a blog post about nutrition. If your lead magnet is based on it’s free workouts, that could still work. So you can put that free workout at the bottom of your blog or offer it in the middle of your blog. Or another thing that you can do is also use popups. Although people find them a little annoying sometimes they’re very, very effective.
And if what you are putting in your pop up is a lead magnet that is super relevant and super valuable, it’s not annoying. It’s actually really helpful for the user because you’re providing them something that they actually want. So if you put a pop up on your blog about nutrition and your lead magnet that you’re offering whether it’s in the popup or it’s in the actual blog or wherever you put it if it is about a free workout, it might convert because they’re on your website. And so they might, you know, be interested in the workout too. But if they’re on the website about nutrition, about giving up gluten or something and then your pop up says like 10 free recipes to get started or something like that. That’s super targeted and valuable and it’s very, very relevant to the type of content that they’re reading in that moment.
So the likeliness of that lead magnet doing pretty well and converting really well is much higher. So you want to make these lead magnets again as targeted and relevant as possible. And you can put these lead magnets on social media, you can put them in the link in your bio, you can put them throughout your content and definitely have them on your website throughout your website where it makes sense and it’s relevant. You have to think about where people will be when they want that type of content. So to create these lead magnets, you can either create your own or you can hire out. In my years of freelancing, I’ve definitely created a gazillion lead magnets. It’s definitely one of the most asked for projects I feel. That might just be me seeking them out more or noticing them more because I enjoy that work.
But it’s really, really common for people to outsource this. And it’s, you can totally do that if you don’t have the time, but you have extra money, you can do that. But it does get really, really- not to mention, it’s just going to take longer in some certain circumstances instead of if you were able to just create one at yourself. As soon as you have an idea for one, again, the more lead magnets you have, the better they’re going to perform because they’re going to be more targeted in, you’re creating them for specific pieces of content and so they’re going to perform a lot better, you’re going to grow your email list a lot faster. So if you want to hire them out I do still offer those services, but there’s also upwork.com is a place, a great place to find freelancers for a variety of things.
So you can always outsource it, but if you are interested in creating your own and you want them to be very purposeful and effective, then you can also create your own, which I highly recommend you learn how to create them yourself. The other thing about lead magnets is they have to actually be, you know, really valuable and effective because these lead magnets are most people’s first impression of you. And it’s going to give people a small piece of what it will be like to work with you. What kind of value you bring and what kind of transformation or quick wins that you are able to offer people. So it’s not just about creating a lead magnet and getting it out there, it has to be done really, really well. And I’m not saying this to confuse you or to discourage you.
It’s not that difficult to do, but it is something that has to be purposeful and mindful. So I am hosting a workshop to teach people how to create effective lead magnets yourself. And in this workshop we’re going to go over how to create a purpose for the lead magnet, how it fits into your marketing strategy and how to make a lead magnet create some sort of transformation that’s gonna stick with your audience and want them to want more of what you have to offer. And hopefully this will bridge the gap in between where they are and where they would need to be to buy from you, whatever you’re selling, whether that’s a service or a digital product of some sort. So we’re going to go over all of the steps to creating a good lead magnet that is effective. How to outline it, how to decide what the call to action is going to be and how to position it and your lead magnet. And I will even go over how to design it yourself with some really simple, easy to use tools and different tutorials that I can send you to. And I also have lots of design tips to make documents really beautiful. Even if you struggle with design, like there’s different little hacks that you can do that make documents look really pretty, although it’s very simplistic and it doesn’t take lot of design, experience or skill.
