Christina: 00:00 Hey guys, it’s Christina. And today is a great day on the show because I am having my first podcast guest on the show. I’ve had a solo show since the day I started it. So this is really, really exciting. My first guest is Patricia Bohl and she is the founder of Patricia Bohl Marketing and she helps yoga instructors scale their business. She used to work a nine to five in Europe and she got the opportunity to live in the Caribbean and work for a retreat venue. And so she did their marketing and ended up staying and being a yoga instructor. And she also does Marketing Services and coaching and she will eventually have an online course. She’s also the host of the Yoga Marketing Summit, which I had the pleasure of being a speaker on. And so we’ll definitely talk about that. But in this episode we talk about goal setting and what a good goal looks like and myths about goal-setting and all kinds of great stuff! So definitely stay tuned.
Christina: 01:21 Okay guys. So today we have Patricia and she is joining us to talk about goal setting and I’m so excited because, you are my very first guest on the show, so thank you so much for being on the show.
Patricia: 01:37 Thank you, Christina. Thanks so much for having me.
Christina: 01:39 Yeah! So talking about goals to get started what exactly does it mean to you for people to set goals? Cause I know some people are like, well I want this to happen, but what’s the difference between doing that and actually like sitting down and you know, creating a system for your goals?
Patricia: 02:00 Yeah, that’s the good question. The definition of a goal setting or setting a goal is you identify something you want to accomplish and set actionable milestones and timeframes to achieve it. So I do marketing for Yoga teachers. So let’s pick an example for yoga teachers. Let’s say I’m a young yoga teacher and I want to lead two retreats. So first of all, it’s an excellent goal, but I have to start with several sub steps in order to eventually lead retreats. So of course you need an email list and establish a routine to nurture and grow that list. That would be a sub goal for it. You also need to have a regular teaching practice because when you just drop out or when you just achieved your yoga teacher training, it’s good to have a good practice and a good routine of and knowing you actually doing your yoga classes right.
Patricia: 03:03 You have a little bit of experience and it also makes sense to lead workshops and little events before tackling a retreat event. For example, a yoga and brunch. So you have yoga together, you do yoga together at the local brunch cafe and afterwards you enjoy brunch together or workshops like the inversion workshops for two hours and so on. So it’s good if you set yourself smaller goals that eventually lead you to that big goal of hosting retreats. And when you ask what exactly does it mean to set goals, it also means that once you start to set goals, it means that you take ownership of your yoga career, you become accountable for it, so you are ready to step out of your comfort zone and serve bigger.
Christina: 03:54 Yeah, I really liked that. Taking ownership. That’s definitely sets it apart. So, if someone is starting completely from scratch, like they have never made a legitimate goal before, where do you recommend they start? Like is there a certain number of goals that you think that they should start with or is does that vary? What is the variable.
Patricia: 04:15 First thing that they should do to start the tape. I love that question because it also leads into what you are so passionate about, about strategy and all those things that media plan. So I always encourage people to first start to listen to their dreams and crafting possibilities out of them. So it’s really a no pressure thing. Take the time to find out what your calling is, what your heart’s desire is and your why. Sticking to the example of a yoga teacher. Why you want to be a yoga teacher? You can journal about its peak with your friends, talk to your students, why they like to come to your classes. It filters out what you really want to achieve with your yoga teaching. It can be a short term thing like when you’re just starting maybe. It’s just to get the foot into the door of yoga studios or when once you’re ready to serve big, maybe you want to host online classes. But really start with dreaming. No limits. The sky’s the limit.
Patricia: 05:38 I think that this is also something very important to do because your heart is leading you and once you sit down and take the time to really write that down, you can always come back to this because life happens everyday. Life happens. We are caught up maybe being sick, having a cold. Then you’re stuck in traffic jam or yeah. In general, sitting down and writing that once down. What you, what your heart is, your desire is why you want to achieve that goal.It can lead as your northern star, as your guiding star and also when you’re starting from scratch, you should be aware of that. Things can take time and that it’s okay. It’s all a process and a journey. So if you have big aspirations, big goals, you don’t have to achieve the next month or next week. I know that we are all impatient and want to have things right away, but let’s be realistic.
Patricia: 06:47 That’s not how things work. So take your time and it’s okay and you can totally have big goals and it’s totally okay to take your time to achieve them. It’s also okay to adjust them change. In marketing we have that thing, the shiny object thing that you follow every new shiny object. Don’t give up and change goals as soon as things get a little bit uncomfortable or you think, oh, everybody’s teaching teaching online now. I should do that too. No, go back a little bit. You wanted to teach retreats. So stick to that and also be aware of that. There will be work involved. You will be challenged and it’s not a good goal if you don’t need to step out of your comfort zone and also be aware of that.
Patricia: 07:41 You need to adapt to unforeseen situations. Like what I mentioned before, you might become sick or um, everyday life happens. Make plans for that, that you still can achieve your goals.
Christina: 07:57 Right. I often feel like I’m starting over all the time, you know, because you just kind of change your direction like you said, and then things happen and you have to adjust and then sometimes you even surprise yourself and might even make bigger goals and realize you didn’t push yourself enough. I love what you said about starting with why you are a yoga teacher and starting there so you know where to begin on the path. That’s really great. So do you have some myths or misunderstandings that people have when it comes to goal setting?
Patricia: 08:43 Yeah. There I come back again to yoga teachers for, for us, it’s really difficult to create goals. We want to live in flow and we feel uncomfortable when we are striving for a goal. So however, yeah, desire is the fuel of life and without desire, nothing can be achieved and that makes a big difference whether our goals are selfish or not. So as a Yogi, we are encouraged to give up attachment to results. And there especially, I like the quote from Gandhi who says only the person who is utterly detached and utterly dedicated is free to enjoy life. So yeah, it’s totally okay to be a yoga teacher and set goals, as long as you are not selfish about it as long if you have, if you think teaching Yoga, you do so many good things for people. So it’s really a good goal and it’s nothing wrong with if you want to serve bigger. Right? Become accountable for us. It’s the misunderstanding is that setting goal has to be unspecific. No, that’s not at all the case.
Christina: 09:59 Right. How do you think that someone knows if their goals are too big or too small? How do you gauge how much you’re challenging yourself or not challenging yourself?
Patricia: 10:13 Hmm. Yeah. I think goals always should put you out of your comfort zone. So if, if you’re totally comfortable with it, then maybe the goal is too small. Um, for some this means that, uh, yeah, maybe you are too scared to ask a yoga student for that email address, sense of permission to send them coach emails. So if that makes you feel uncomfortable, I think it’s a good goal. For us, they are not scared to teach in front of 33,000 Yogis on a yoga festival. So if this is no challenge for you, while I, it would scare everything out of me, It could mean that it’s not a good goal for you. So. I also think that no goal is too big, as long as you are willing to really work on achieving it. Maybe achieving that goal looks different for you. Then you see the past words reaching that goal in the end might look different than you think. But again give up attachments to results.
Christina: 11:18 Oh, I love how you talk about using how you feel about the goal to kind of gauge, you know, like if it makes you a little nervous, it’s, you’re probably on the right track. So you mentioned before I’m adjusting your goals, so how often do you think that someone should do that? Should adjust their goals or set new ones for where they’re at?
Patricia: 11:48 So in terms of setting new goals, I think you should set goals as soon as we reached the old one. Yeah. So if you are a business owner.
Patricia: 12:01 The middle of it, they got, it makes sense to think about your strategy and longterm vision every three to five years and derived from their goals you want to achieve to fulfill your longterm vision and also make maybe a yearly status. So take once per year. The time to check on whether you are still on a good path to achieve your strategy and if not, maybe adjust your goals and the means to fulfill those goals, if that makes sense.
Christina: 12:32 Yeah! It makes perfect sense! Do you have any resources that you use for goal setting?
Patricia: 12:40 I would encourage everybody to Google smart goals. That’s a big project management, term. So smart goals are specific. So the S is for specific, M for measurable, an A attainable are realistic and T for timely. And once you Google that, you, you get great resources, free resources. So to break it down a little bit further, specific means well defined, clear and unambiguous, measurable with specific criteria that measure your progress towards the accomplishment of the goal, achievable, attainable and not impossible to achieve. And Realistic Means Within reach, realistic and relevant to your life and timely, with a clear defined timeline, including a starting date and to target. So the purpose is to create urgency and not get surprised by everyday life.
Christina: 13:46 Right? Yeah. And I will definitely put that in the show notes so that you guys could see all of that. So that’s a really great stuff! You are the host of the Yoga Marketing Summit, so why don’t you tell us a bit more about that?
