If you have an online business that hasn’t taken off the way you want to, there could be a few reasons.
You’re either being impatient, need a better strategy or you’re not being consistent.
I hear this desire for consistency all the time. As I’ve been going through this research phase in my business lately, I’ve been learning so much about the needs and struggles of my audience. Some people don’t struggle with consistency, but many do. It’s not because they don’t have good habits or they’re lazy. Neither of those are true.
In this episode, I go over the reasons online wellness business owners struggle to be consistent and what to do about it.
I highlight the THREE biggest reasons you struggle to stay consistent and give you the way to squash it. Once you see what’s holding you back, there will be no stopping you.
00 Hi everyone, I’m Christina and this podcast is one that’s going to be really, really important. So I’m really excited to get into it. I’ve recently had a lot of conversations with a lot of you and I got some really, really great feedback. if you’ve been following me, you’ll know that I’ve been in this very deep research phase because I’m creating something really, really awesome for next year and I wanted to know as much as possible about what your needs are and what you’re struggling with and all of that. And the common thing that I kept hearing almost 100%, like probably nine out of 10 people would say this and it was just that they were struggling to be consistent. And I’m not surprised because since I’ve been a freelancer for so many years, this is something that I help with most of my clients is to help them with consistency.
56 And to be clear, I’m talking about being consistent mostly with your content or your social media. And a lot of people have told me, I know I need to be consistent, but it’s just something that I’m struggling with. And so I wanted to do this episode on giving you the reasons of why you’re probably struggling to stay consistent and exactly what to do about it. Because consistency is, as you probably know, so important to the success of your business. You absolutely must be consistent and continuously keep showing up. And if you’re not, you have to address that first. So even if you have the best strategy in the world, if you’re not implementing it, it doesn’t matter. And so I will also want it to point out that last week I did well the registration was open for my content workshop and we basically yesterday the workshop is the what’s released to the people that registered and we went through and we created a six month minimum content plan to start either now or in 2020, whatever they wanted.
11 And I’m actually opening it back up for three days because the workshop is recorded and it has workbooks and everything with it and a content plan template that you just simply fill it out with a step by step method that I put together in this workshop. And it makes it really, really simple and you won’t even believe how many content ideas you end up having at the end because of how simple it’s walked through. So I’m only opening it up for three days. So nothing not for very long time. But if you did want to if you missed that and you wanted to check it out, it’s, you can go to your wellness marketer.com/workshop. OK. So let’s get started on the reasons that you are probably struggling to be consistent. I’ve put together three main reasons and these are the reasons that I see over and over again.
09 And whenever we tackle these specific reasons, it is so simple to be consistent. I actually used to blog on my websites and I would write a blog every week. And if you scroll back through my blog, you’ll see that it didn’t last very long because I realized that writing these long thorough blogs is just, I don’t know, it’s very time consuming for me and it’s not particularly enjoyable. So I ended up just not keeping up with it and that’s when I started a podcast. Because I feel like just through speaking for me personally, it’s so much easier for me to speak out my thoughts than to write them out. I feel like my brain works so much faster than I can type. And so writing it out is just not sustainable for me. And so whenever I started my podcast, it’s now I’ve never missed a week.
06 it’s so easy for me to stay consistent. I can promise you that I will have content out every single week on my podcast because I do not struggle to keep up with it. so, and that’s what I want for you. And that’s what I always want from my clients. And whenever we find that sweet spot, it is always so great because that’s when the results started happening. So let’s talk about these three main reasons. The first one is that you’re not getting results. when you’re not getting results from your content. I mean, there is a time period where you really just gotta push through it because it does take time. You have to be patient, but when you’ve been doing it for so long and you’re not getting results, it does burn you out. It can be just really not exciting. Of course, when you’re not seeing any results at all.
56 I mean you should see you know, a progression and website traffic or you know, more conversions from it or just seeing that more people are finding it. The relationships being built, people having conversations with you about it. Like all of those things are great signs that you are moving forward and it shows progression. So when you’re not seeing any of that, it can be really, really tough to keep going because it feels like you’re working for no reason. So what we’re looking for is those signs of just some progression. So when you’re not getting those, there are some reasons why you’re not getting results. one of the first things is content promotion. You might not be promoting your content properly. so you want to at least be emailing it to your email list and have some sort of system to generate leads to go into that email list.
55 So I talk about list all the time and that needs to be something that you are implementing. And I have a couple of podcasts on that and I’m definitely going to be talking a lot more about list building because it’s so important. I will put which episode was about list building in the show notes. So you can check that out because you want to constantly be having people go into your email list and then you can email your content to your email list and that is a way to provide value to everyone who is a subscriber for you. another reason is that your content topics are off. They’re all over the place or they’re not quite what your target audience once. And this is why having conversations with them is so important. And the things that I’ve gotten from implementing this in my business has been unbelievable.
52 I mean, it’s completely shifted a lot of my strategy. And for some of it, whenever you’re shifting strategy, it can mean that you lose some other people, but you’re going to gain so much more by having that clarity in all of your conversions will go up, people will start to connect with what you’re putting out there because you know that the content that you’re creating, the content topics you’re choosing are exactly what they want when you have conversations with them. So a third reason might be that your content could use some work. so it’s usually whenever this is the case that the content isn’t clear enough or providing enough value, it might not be that the content itself isn’t valuable, but it might not be thorough enough or it doesn’t provide some sort of win in the end, whether they’re being a lot more educated in something or they’re given some sort of action steps to implement and have this quick win in their life.
55 And see a little bit of, you know, a little chunk of results that you can provide. So if your content is just very, like it might be too surface level or it could be too in depth and this is why you need to have conversations with your audience to see what that is. You can also test out different levels of content and see which ones perform better. And that will give you an idea of where your audience is. This is something that I, I still struggle with. but I definitely struggled in the beginning because my whole world is so much marketing. I’m constantly listening to podcasts and breeding, going to seminars. I have clients, like all of these things, my whole entire life is marketing. And so whenever I say a marketing term and people don’t know what I’m talking about, sometimes I feel like I need to be more advanced, you know, in the way that I’m speaking about it because it’s just my world.
54 And so I don’t realize that it’s not everyone else’s world and they don’t know what I’m talking about. And so I, for me it wasn’t that my content was too surface level. A lot of my content was just to advance and I needed to scale that back and start where my audience is to truly try and help them. And of course you’re going to have some of your audience is going to be people who have been studying what you do for a lot longer and maybe your more advanced pieces are perfect for them, but you need to figure that out where the bulk of your audience is. So those are the three reasons that I see the most often as far as why a content is not getting results. And that is that you’re not promoting it enough or in the right ways or the content topics are just off and you need to find where the need really is, what people are actually wanting from you.
49 And whether your content itself is too thorough or not thorough enough or it doesn’t provide some sort of a result in the end. This second most common reason that people are not being consistent is that they don’t have a plan. And so coming up with contents as you create is a complete nightmare. Uh, so if you are trying to put out weekly content in, you’re coming up with the topic the week before or even two weeks before you’re running way too close to your deadline. Our creative space to strategize is very different than our creative space to create. So when you are in the strategizing mindset where you’re actually creating a plan and you’re mapping things out you’re not in the same place that you are when you’re actually creating that content. So you want to maximize on the different mindsets that you’re in.
45 And when you’re in that strategic place, you want to take advantage of it and come up with a full plan that’s going to last you quite a while. And your content planning should be strategic. It should not be on a whim just to have a topic. You want it to be something that kind of goes in as a story and guides people through a journey, through your content. And so when you’re coming up with these random topics every week or every other week or whatever it might be, your audience will have no idea what to expect from you and it’s going to be all over the place. So like I said, a journey is always a really nice way to plan things out. And you also want it to ultimately lead to things that are happening in your business. So you want to align your content with your different promotions, with different related things that are happening in the world.
39 Like maybe your business is very seasonal or you’re doing something that is related to holidays or something like that. You want to make sure that your content is leading up to those big moments in your business. And that means that you have to plan out in advance, not the day before or the week before. Hopefully you’re not doing it the day before. But so you just want it to have an actual plan. And so your audience might have no idea what they need and they might think that they need something else. So sometimes you’re content is, works out really well when it builds on top of itself. So if they think that they need something else, but you as the expert know to get the results that they want, they need something totally different. You can create content about what they think they need and educate them a little more and then start creating content of what they actually need.
40 And just things like that. That’s just one of many, many examples as to how your content can build on top of itself. And so having a plan as you can imagine is so key to staying consistent because when you don’t have to be in that strategic space every other day or every week you can just follow your plan and when life gets busy, you don’t have to even think about what you need to create. You just need to follow your plan. And so that is why my workshop is so important and I’m so happy that we were able to create so many content plans yesterday. And so if you do want to get into the replay, I’ll put a link in the show notes for that as well. The third reason is that your content plan is using a channel that you paid.
33 And I don’t see this as often, which is why I put it last, but I do see it and what I mean by that is that someone has convinced you that you should do video or you should do a podcast because it’s more future or it’s like the big thing right now. and so you’re trying to use that medium to create your content and you don’t like it. So in the beginning it’s normal to not really like or feel comfortable with something that you’ve never done before. So I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about there are certain mediums that you’re just not going to like, it’s just not your thing. like for me, blogging, it’s so great for SEO. Obviously there’s so many benefits to it. Some people, they might not want to listen to something, they just want to read it and, or they just want to have it laid out in front of them visually and they’re just visual people.
30 And so there are reasons why blogging might be better in some situations than podcasting. but you have to choose what you’re better at in what you enjoy the most. Because if you really don’t like it and creating content is a chore every week, it’s going to be very difficult to stay. And so as long as whatever medium you’re using provides value in a transformation, you are good. So choose a medium that you like, whether it’s video, podcasting, or blogging, either one of those is totally fine. Don’t let anyone convince you that you should do something else. Do what you’re going to be consistent with and what you’re going to enjoy. obviously there’s going to be some weeks that you just don’t feel like creating content or whatever the case may be, but most of the time you should be excited to create your next piece of content.
29 So if you’re never feeling like that, it’s time to go back to the content plan and really figure out what you need to adjust to make it more fitting to your lifestyle. So whether that’s the frequency or the medi you need to look at those things and make sure that it’s something that you’re going to enjoy for the longterm. So let’s go into what you need to do action-wise to prevent these three reasons from stopping you from being consistent, stopping you to be consistent, whatever that word is. So the things that you need to do is you need to have a strategic content plan that gets results in something you are excited about. Those. That is the biggest thing is that you need a content plan. But this content plan, again, it has to be strategic and it has to be something that fits with your lifestyle so that you are excited about it. That means choosing the right media and choosing the right frequency. And then also making sure that your content plan aligns with the things that you have going on in your business and you’re planning far out. And it all is aligned with what you do.
45 So if you don’t want to purchase the replay of the workshop I can give you a quick rundown of what we go over in the workshop. And so in the workshop we start out talking about the media and frequency, choosing what’s right for you. And then we go through a process of breaking down topics that are aligned with what your niche is. And we come up with a gazillion ideas, like absolutely love this process. And so you want to break down your topics into sections and then we go through a research and inspiration phase to come up with these topics. And so one of the, my favorite ways of doing it is I’m talking to your audience. So I have different ways of doing that and I give you different strategies to do that. So you can look at FAQ’s, forums online and to talk to your audience.
41 I also give, cause you can conduct a survey if you would like, and I give you the questions that you should ask them to go through that. and so in the end we create a six month content plan in how to get it into a calendar. You don’t have to plan out six months, I recommend do you plan out at least three months. but within the workshop we do six just because it actually, with the process of creating all of the content ideas, it doesn’t make it difficult. So we do six months and of course your content plan, it can be adjusted of course. so if you end up doing something new, you can totally change things around and move it around. But those ideas are there so you can arrange them however you want. And I also give a calendar to help just like map it out.
27 But you really, you can use anything you can use any calendar that you can buy, whether it’s digital or whatever you would like. so I hope you found this podcast helpful. And you see, hopefully your you might have an idea of why you’re inconsistent and you don’t think that there’s something wrong with you or it’s your work ethic because it’s honestly usually not that. It’s one of these three things. so if you would like the workshop replay, I’m opening it up for today, which is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and it’s closed on Friday. So just for the next couple of days I will put the link in the show notes. It’s your wellness marketer.com/workshop. so I hope you guys have an amazing day.
