With how competitive and saturated the online wellness industry is, it’s no surprise business owners fear there is too much competition to break through to build a successful business online. While it’s true that you have a lot of noise to cut through, it shouldn’t stop you.
Not because you’re so awesome or because you should believe in yourself.
I mean, those things are completely true, but it’s not what I’m talking about today. I’m talking about legitimate reasons the competition likely won’t even be in your way when building your online business.
The goal here is to not even have much competition. And I don’t mean by taking them all down. I mean by making your business more special and unique. In this episode, I talk about the reasons you can no longer worry about the competition and exactly what to do to stand out.
We will discuss how to find your own unique value proposition so you build a business that is like no one else.
Christina: (00:00)
Hi everyone. I am Christina. And today we’re going to talk about why competition doesn’t matter to your online wellness business. I’m a big concern is often competition in which it’s a valid concern because as you probably know, the wellness industry is incredibly competitive, especially online. So it’s definitely a valid concern. But what I’m going to go over in this episode is why it actually doesn’t matter and how you can break through the noise. And a lot of it does come down to marketing strategy and we will talk a bit more about that. But, um, if you feel like your marketing strategy is not working, I do have a free quiz and um, it’s it, the quiz basically breaks down what could be wrong with your marketing strategies. So you just answer, I think it’s only like 10 questions and it will give you, um, a basic idea of what, which part of your marketing strategy is the weakest.
Christina: (00:58)
And so you’ll know what to focus on. And to take that quiz. It is, you are wellness marketer.com/quiz. Okay. So there are four reasons why I think that you should not worry about competition and why it just shouldn’t be a concern for you. And um, I and some, some of my clients don’t really, they never really mentioned competition. when I’m working with them and some of them, they talk about it a lot. And so the very first one that I’m gonna talk about is that no one is you. And I know that’s really cliche, but it’s actually true. You might notice that even you yourself follow certain people, certain experts on things that bring you value and you tend to gravitate towards specific people. And that’s because they have something that you connect with. And maybe it’s the way that they teach or the topics they teach on or whatever it might be.
Christina: (02:00)
But there’s just something about them and what they deliver that makes you connect with them. And so it’s going to be the exact same for you. People are going to connect with you and I’m in a different way than they do the competition. So always keep that in mind because that is one thing that can not be duplicated. No one can teach like you are, talk like you or look like you or be like you. No one can actually replicate that. So it is a one superpower that you have that cannot be stolen. So it’s really, really powerful. Um, this second reason is that, um, you can actually make your business stand out. Now, this is always the goal. You want your, um, what you have to offer to stand out so much that you don’t even actually really technically have competition because there’s no like, other business that’s quite like yours.
Christina: (02:56)
So that is, that’s ideal. And sometimes that takes time to evolve. So if you can’t come up with it over nights, what that will be, um, that’s fine. It just should always be in the back of your mind. So they’re always kind of going at towards that because you know that that is the goal. So as you’re tweaking things in your business, tweaking your services, your marketing messages, um, your clients experience, everything that you are creating within your business, just always remember that your ultimate goal is to be a completely different puzzle that you put together with all of those pieces where you’re so different that you don’t even technically have competition. Um, when you stand out you just, you don’t have competition, um, in the same way. And if you are like everyone else and you really are just replicating what everyone else is doing, it will be very difficult to, um, stand out from the competition obviously.
Christina: (03:57)
So competition is a really, really valid concern in that situation. So if that is you really started thinking about ways to stand out and I do have some other episodes about this so I can put a couple in the show notes. I have one about finding your unique value proposition and it’s just a simple system that I go through. And, um, I also have, um, episodes about finding your niche and I have episodes about making your services even better as well. So I can link all of those in the show notes so that you can check those out. Those are really great, um, directions to go when you are, you know, creating this business that is different from everyone else. So, um, an example I wanted to talk about too was, um, that always comes to mind when I think about this concept is why seven yoga studio.
Christina: (05:00)
If you’ve ever been to New York and you’re into yoga, there is, um, a studio, it’s called Y seven, and they do hip hop yoga and it’s specifically just hip hop, um, hot yoga. And it might not be your thing, but you can look at them, um, as far as their brand messaging and what they offer. And it’s really interesting from a business perspective because they really do stand out from everyone else. There aren’t that I know of. They’re not a lot of, um, hip hop yoga studios that have that kind of, um, branding that they do. And so it’s really interesting. So if you are looking to do a hot yoga class, you know, they don’t really fall in line with that. And they do actually, like I’ve gone a few times and um, it’s very similar to a hot yoga class, but it does have that nice twist it.
Christina: (05:57)
So it is a completely different experience so you don’t have to be, you know, reinvent things, um, to that kind of degree. But that’s just a great example of how they’ve really stood out and they’re really not like every other yoga studio out there for sure. Um, so the third reason that I always talk to my clients about is that most business owners quit online. Um, this is just being honest. A lot of this is about who sticks it out the longest. I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of social media accounts that have been abandoned, plenty of blogs that have been abandoned. YouTube channels, podcasts, like this happens a lot. And so whenever you stick it out, all of the competition that like was, um, around, it does tend to clean up. Like not everyone’s going to leave, of course, because there are people who stick with it and they are successful because of it.
Christina: (06:56)
But a lot of people quit. Whether it’s because they’re just going a different direction. They’re not passionate about it anymore. They’re burnt out. Whatever the case is, a lot of people get very distracted or give up on for a variety of reasons. And so at that point, once the competition has cleared a bit for you, all of the new people that come on, they’re building audiences from scratch and you’ve been around for a few years, so you have a pretty solid audience. So that really makes you stand out more than more, I wouldn’t say more than anything, but it makes you stand out a lot. Um, you sticking it out and sting around being consistent, building that trust with people and just consistently bringing out good content and serving people and not quitting or giving up or disappearing for years. That happens to, um, even the, um, people who are really successful, like the big gurus that I follow.
Christina: (07:53)
I, there’s even some that just disappear for years and then they try and come back and it’s kind of not the same because it’s hard to take people seriously. So that’s one thing that you can do that’s fairly simple, is just find a marketing strategy that you can actually keep up with and be consistent with for the longterm, something maintainable and you don’t have to worry about breaking that trust with your audience or totally blowing your business. Um, so that is a huge thing is that most owners quit. And I really mean it when I say most. Um, it happens a lot. They, um, quit for many reasons, but if you don’t quit, you don’t have to worry about that. So the last reason is abundance. In the wellness industry. I’m sure you’re well aware there is a huge need for everything you offer. Whatever you do when you’re listening to this podcast, whatever part of the wellness industry you’re in, I can guarantee that there’s a huge, there’s just a huge need.
Christina: (08:58)
So if there’s like a gazillion more of you, there’s still way more people who need you. And this concept of bettering yourself and growing as a person in all kinds of ways, whether it’s physical or with your diet, mentally, spiritually, all of these things are becoming such a trend upward, um, which is fantastic. And so there’s so much more interest in, um, and trying these different, um, elements out in your life and you know, growing those. So that’s another really big reason that um, competition should not be a concern because there really is just plenty for everyone. And so, um, those are the four main reasons on no one is you. The second one is you can make your business stand out, which you absolutely should. And the third one is most business owners quit. And the last one is that there is a huge abundance.
Christina: (09:58)
So I wanted to give you, um, some steps on us, like what you can do, you know, um, to combat some of these things that do bring businesses down because of the competition. Some ways that you can stand out. And like I said, I will be linking some episodes in the show notes that go more in depth. So I don’t want to go too in depth on this episode because, um, I already have on my podcast, but I will give you like a simple breakdown. So to stand out, um, the first thing that I usually have clients do is we do a brain dump of everything that you can think of that makes you different. And some, um, examples of how you can be different is how you deliver your services or you, I’m specializing in things niching. Um, do you serve a very specific group of people?
Christina: (10:55)
Um, do you serve a specific group of people that are in a specific place in their life like, um, moms who are pregnant with their first child? You know, that’s more specific. Um, do you offer a special experience that your competition doesn’t like? What kinds of things until you just brain dump all of that out? A huge brainstorm. I’m writing out everything. And then you go through and you choose like the top three that you think are the most impactful. And of these top three, you want to ask yourself, can you prove them? And when I say, can you prove them? I’m talking about, can you prove them before they start working with you? That’s the important thing. Once they start working with you, obviously you’re not using it in your marketing, you, you’re, you’re demonstrating it after they’ve worked with you. But what we want to do is have a way to have to make that part of your message.
Christina: (11:52)
Meaning it’s got to be something that you can prove in your marketing messages. So before they actually work with you. And if the answer to that is yes, um, that you can prove these top three with like a statement of some sort, then write out that statement. And these are going to be your top three, like your three pillars of your business. Um, if you feel like that they really do make you stand out and start implementing those into your website, into your, your just in your marketing messages overall. Um, so in your social media, any promotions that you do and just kind of make sure they’re present, um, and you’re talking about them and you’re demonstrating them. And, um, the second thing is, um, mostly to avoid the, you know, most business owners quit reason which is to show up and be consistent in your business and you must be everywhere that you promise you’re going to be.
Christina: (12:50)
So if you say that you are going to have a blog post every single week, you have to always have that blog post come out, um, or if it’s a Facebook live or whatever it is, you just have to be consistent because that’s what going that is what is going to build that trust with people and help people take you seriously. And um, it’s really, really important for breaking out from the competition because your competition that is being successful, they’re definitely being consistent. So you can’t afford to not be consistent. So I hope you guys found that helpful. If you did want to take the quiz, it is a, your wellness marketer.com/quiz is where you can find it and it will just tell you, you answer some questions. It will tell you the weak spot in your marketing strategy if you feel like it’s not working. Um, but let me know if you guys have any questions. I hope you all have an amazing day.
